Intro to Employee Experience

by | Feb 5, 2020

If you want to improve the enthusiasm and engagement at your company, then it’s crucial to create an enjoyable employee experience (EX). Yet, employee experience includes multiple company-related experiences over a span of time.

You can’t expect every day to be the same. As a result, EX can have an up and down wavelength. Invariably, it means your company must be attuned to the current employee experience.

In a digital world, employees are better skilled and better educated. Instead of feeling like they need to work, employees want to focus on why they want to work. The EX is about the culture, the physical structure of the office, and the technological landscape.

Foundation to employee experience (EX)

You’ve probably heard of customer experience. Well, EX is the same thing except for employees. It seems common knowledge that when you have happy employees, they will in turn want to keep your customers happy.

A study produced by IBM and Globoforce found that better employee experiences induced improved overall performance.

Further, a 2017 Deloitte Insights report found that 79% of companies believe that employee experience is a critical trend—so much so that new careers are being created in this field every day.

When an individual spends most of their life working, they want to do something that will have a positive impact. According to the IBM Smarter Workforce Institute, employee experience is defined as, “a set of perceptions that employees have about their experiences at work in response to their interactions with the organization.”

So, EX could include the long commute you have to make every day or an open workspace with loud coworkers. On the other hand, you might have the option to work remotely or bring your own device to work. When it’s raining outside, and the traffic is tighter, having a positive EX is what gets employees out the door. Or, a bad EX will have employees searching for a new job in their free time.

Every company wants an engaged employee, and EX is how to lead them in that direction. Unquestionably, an impactful EX is probably one of the best investments you can make today. It will improve recruitment, onboarding, retention, and profitability.
